Looking back at 2012 when Wande Coal released the video for Private Trips and the excitement that came along with it, how it felt like it was ushering in a completely different era of music. The ridiculously stylish video and crisp visuals was something we hadn’t experienced yet.
The Sesan directed cut was so ahead of it’s time; visually beyond a lot of videos that had been released up that point. In the video W.C stops at a diner to fill up his car and leaves with the pretty waitress; rescuing from her bland Nevada life and giving her the Las Vegas treatment(privately of course).
The song itself, the least appreciated of the three bangers W.C released at the time (Go Low and Been Long You Saw Me), was so outlandish at that point, people didn’t know what box to place it in. Sure, it was nice but it wasn’t going to make any waves at parties or at the clubs. Automatically it seemed like a dud to the average Nigerian music listener, but it definitely wasn’t. Wande Coal took us on a trip to the future with the smooth sounds he created on Private Trips.
Then the video dropped and it’s iconic status was set. Its sleek videography and video effects put it ahead of anything that was out at that point(the matte black porsche at that diner; c’mon. Iconic).
In retrospect Private Trips cemented Wande Coal’s place as a fearless musical mind, and is easily one of the best NIgerian songs of the past 5 years.
Still in doubt? Watch the video below.
